Emma Smith and Chris Laoutaris 400 years since Shakespeare's First Folio
In November 1623, Edward Blount finally took delivery at his bookshop near St Paul’s of a book that had been long in the making: Master William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies. The first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays, appearing seven years after his death in 1616, its pages included 36 plays, half of which had not previously been printed. We are bringing together two of the country’s leading experts to mark this milestone celebration. Emma Smith is Professor of Shakespeare Studies at the University of Oxford and author of Shakespeare's First Folio. Dr Chris Laoutaris is Associate Professor of Shakespeare and Early Modern Drama at The Shakespeare Institute and author of Shakespeare's Book: The Intertwined Lives behind the First Folio. The event will be chaired by Professor Charlotte Scott, Director of Knowledge & Engagement at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.
