Terms & Conditions

» All events take place in the venue printed on your ticket. You will be contacted by email in advance of an event if the venue changes.
» Unless an event is cancelled e.g. because the speaker is ill or becomes unavailable, tickets are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged. All tickets include VAT. All details and prices are as advertised, but may be liable to change.
» Tickets are sold though an external box office. Ticket sales online finish shortly before an event starts. To book tickets by phone please call 0333 666 3366. Lines are open Monday to Friday 9am-7pm (excluding bank holidays). All tickets booked by phone or online incur a booking fee. This fee is for the costs of running the external box office and is not revenue for the Festival. Tickets can be purchased on the door during the Festival, subject to availability. Tickets sent out in the post will cost an additional £2.50. Customers can add their tickets to their Apple or Google wallet.
» Books are available to purchase after each event at the pop-up Waterstones bookshop and, if relevant, authors will sign copies of their book after each event. We request that you do not bring copies of books not purchased at the event for signing.
» Some events may be filmed and we have a photographer at the Festival taking pictures for marketing purposes. By buying a ticket you are giving your consent to being filmed or photographed. Please let a senior member of the Festival team know if you do not wish to be filmed or photographed. Parents/guardians will be consulted before any images of children are taken.
» The Crowne Plaza Hotel has step free access and accessible toilets. If you require assistance with access or seating at a venue or have other special requirements, please notify us at [email protected] in advance so that we can assist you.
» We reserve the right to alter the programme or substitute performers or workshop tutors if circumstances dictate. Please check the website or follow us on Twitter @Stratlitfest for programme change alerts.
» If a headline speaker has to withdraw, and no suitable alternative speaker is available pursuant to the clause above, then tickets will be refunded by our external Box Office Ticketsource. This may take a few days to show on your statement. Booking fees and other charges will not be included in the refund.
» All seats are unreserved. All events are an hour long unless otherwise stated and doors open half an hour before the start time.
» Adults are expected to buy a ticket for Family Events unless the programme states otherwise. All children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The Festival takes no responsibility for unaccompanied children. Children under 2 and babes in arms do not need a ticket.
» We give guidance on the suitable age range for a Family Event but this is guidance only and parents or guardians should make their own judgement. All opinions expressed by speakers attending the Festival are theirs.
» No animals of any kind except assistance dogs are allowed into any Festival venues or events.
» The Festival will not tolerate any abuse of our staff or volunteers. Any issues should be addressed to the Festival Director at [email protected].
» Please check our website before you travel for any last minute changes

These terms and conditions of Membership should also be read in conjunction with the Festival’s Privacy Notice.

When you become a Member of Festival you are entering into a contract with us, the Stratford Literary Festival (a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered in England and Wales No: 1164662) which is governed by these terms and conditions.

1. Membership products

The different types of Festival Membership are as follows:

Friends Membership – enables priority booking for two tickets per event

Benefactors Membership - enables priority booking for two tickets per event and two complimentary tickets to an event at the Spring Festival up to a value set by the Festival which may be subject to change. (This is subject to availability. This offer does not include workshops or books included with tickets.)

(This is subject to availability. This offer does not include workshops or books included with tickets.)

2. Conditions

Event capacities are determined by the Festival, which reserves the right to restrict the number of tickets available for selected events. Tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis. All tickets are subject to availability.

The Festival aims to be fully accessible to all. Please help us to accommodate any specific individual needs by contacting the Festival in advance of attending.

Online booking for events is subject to availability, and regardless of Membership level.

Please see the Festival’s general terms and conditions for information about tickets.

3. Subscription Fees and Payment

All Members must pay an annual Membership Fee. The Festival reserves the right in its absolute discretion to change the Membership Fee each year.

The agreement between the Festival and you is entered into for 12 months from the date of registration or renewal.

The Membership is valid immediately from the day that the Membership Fee is received. You will be notified 7 days before your Membership is about to renew. If you do not renew your Membership, it will expire automatically at the end of the Membership Period.

Upon expiry of your Membership you will no longer be a Member and you will no longer be entitled to receive any Membership benefits.

The Festival may contact recently lapsed Members regarding re-joining.

In order to comply with HMRC guidelines, the Festival is not able to accept CAF cheques or payments from Charitable Foundations as payment for the Membership Fee.

The Festival reserves the right in its sole discretion to terminate your Membership at any point during the agreement if in its reasonable opinion you behave in a way which is inappropriate or considered to be harassing, causing distress or inconvenience to any other audience member or member of Festival staff or may bring the Festival into disrepute; or if you breach any of these terms and conditions.

Following suspension or termination of any Membership, invitations to Members-only activities and all associated Membership postal mailings and email communications will cease.

Subject to any statutory right to cancel, your Membership Fee is non-refundable once payment has been received by the Festival and you are not entitled to cancel or terminate before the expiry of the Membership Period.

Membership rights and benefits are not transferable.

Membership rights shall cease on a Member's death or on an individual ceasing to be a Member. No monies will be refunded.

4. Your Details/Personal Data

Personal data is information that identifies an individual such as name, address, phone number or email address. This information, provided by you, is required by the Festival in order to allow both the Festival and our Members to fulfil their contractual obligations and for the Festival to provide the Membership benefits. It also enables the Festival to provide you with relevant information about the Festival, unless you ask us not to do so (see below).

We collect data regarding your relationship with the Festival, which includes:

When and how you join as a Member

When you make bookings for Festival events

When you open, click or respond to Festival emails or browse the Festival’s website

All information regarding Members is kept confidential. Data is stored on secure, encrypted servers and on the Festival’s CRM system. Limited information may be shared with third parties in order to deliver Membership benefits. This includes Mailchimp (for email newsletters) and Stripe (our online payment platform).

The Festival will use your details to contact you regarding your Membership and renewal, and with passwords to enable you to book tickets in the priority booking period. We will also provide you with email updates on Membership benefits, including events, offers and activities, and ways to support the Festival that we believe you may be interested in. If you do not wish to receive these email updates you can unsubscribe by following the link in the emails. However, unsubscribing will mean you will not receive priority booking passwords.

Members can use the Membership system to update their address and card details they submitted for payment. The Festival does not have access to your card details.

The Festival will not collect or process sensitive personal data on Members such as race, ethnic origin, physical or mental health, political or philosophical views or sexual orientation without a good reason to do so and without your consent. For example, we may need information regarding accessibility requirements so that you are able to access and enjoy our facilities and events. It is part of the Festival’s inclusive policy to provide as similar an experience as possible to all visitors and individuals, regardless of any disability.

The Festival will never sell or swap the personal details of its Members. Personal data will not be disclosed to external organisations other than those acting as contracted agents for the Festival for purposes outlined above and in the Festival’s privacy notice.

If you are purchasing a Membership as a gift, you confirm that you have the relevant individual's consent to share their information with the Festival.

5. General

The failure of or delay by the Festival to exercise or enforce any right in these terms does not constitute a waiver of such rights.

The Festival reserves the right to revise these terms and conditions and the substance of the Membership. Current terms and conditions apply to all Memberships regardless of their contract start date.

These terms and conditions shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with English law and, in the event of any dispute arising out of these terms and conditions and/or your Membership, you agree with the Festival to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.

The Festival shall not be liable if it is delayed or prevented from performing any obligation under this agreement for reasons outside of its reasonable control.
